Budd Larner, P.C., is an equal opportunity employer which does not discriminate on the basis of race, national origin, religion, age, color, sex, disability or veteran's status, or any other characteristic protected by local, state or federal laws, rules or regulations. The Firm's policy applies to all terms and conditions of employment.
The Summer Associate program has historically been a primary source of our first-year associate hiring. Each summer, the Firm hires approximately six second-year law students for participation in the program, which is intended to simulate the professional experience of a new associate. Summer Associates are given the broad view of all of the Firm's areas of practice, through research, seminars and hands-on assignments, by working directly under the guidance of shareholders and associates.
Budd Larner encourages applications for the program from second-year law students who show maturity, professionalism and excellent legal skills. Academic performance and writing skills are important considerations, but demonstrated leadership skills and diverse backgrounds are highly valued. Involvement in law review or journals, moot court or other law school activities, as well as outside work experience and non-academic accomplishments, especially community service activities, are important factors in our selection process. Intangible factors, such as personality, drive and communication skills are given consideration in the hiring decisions.
Summer Associates receive assignments from shareholders and associates through the Firm's Program Coordinator. The program is structured and administered to ensure that there are opportunities for participants to experience projects from more than one area of practice and, where possible, work on projects in areas that are of particular interest to the Summer Associate. Summer Associates receive both formal and informal feedback from the attorneys who assign them work. In addition, each summer associate receives an informal mid-summer and a formal end-of-summer review regarding their overall performance. End-of-summer reviews are usually administered by the Hiring Partner or a member of the Board of Directors.
Summer Associates are each assigned an associate mentor in order to provide additional guidance and support. Mentors are dedicated to making the summer experience a realistic and positive one by fielding questions and providing advice on such matters as acclimating, utilizing available resources and balancing workload.
Budd Larner's summer experience includes "Lunch & Learn" seminars, which are designed to teach the fundamentals of our practice areas, as well as provide training in the areas of time management, legal writing and law firm marketing. Other activities are geared to stress the importance of life outside the Firm and provide numerous opportunities to get to know our lawyers and other summer associates through social functions such as receptions, sporting events, Broadway shows and other formal and informal outings. We offer a great all-around summer experience!
JASON WATSON - Seton Hall University Law School (Class of '07) "Most law firms do good work. Most law firms offer the same opportunities to grow. People make a firm some place special. People are the difference between a good summer associate program and a great summer associate program. When I interviewed at Budd Larner, I got the sense that I could be comfortable here. My time as a 2006 Summer Associate confirmed that feeling. I worked with amazing people on challenging and interesting assignments. I also got to see different facets of life as a lawyer by attending depositions, motions, and oral arguments. The people made my summer here a special one."
Students are encouraged to interview with our on-campus representatives by contacting their career placement office or by submitting their credentials to our Firm's Director of Human Resources, Melissa Schmieder at mschmieder@budd-larner.com or 973-379-7734 (fax).
